هي الحيوانات التي تتحكم درجة حرارة البيئة المحيطة بدرجة حرارة أجسامها. ويفضل بعض علماء البيولوجيا استخدام مصطلح إكتوديرم Ectoderm للإشارة إلى هذه الفئة من الفقاريات. والكلمة بحد ذاتها تشير إلى النسيج الخارجي للحيوان الذي تتكون فيه أنسجة الأعصاب، والأعضاء الحسية. ويشير مصطلح ذوات الدم البارد، أو إكتوديرم بالمفهوم البيولوجي إلى الحيوانات التي تخضع درجة حرارة أجسامها الداخلية لظروف البيئة المحيطة، لذلك يطلق عليها الحيوانات متغيرات الحرارة Poikilothermic.
تشمل الحيوانات ذوات الدم البارد الزواحف، والبرمائيات، والأسماك (الشكل الرقم 6). لذلك فليس لديها القدرة على المحافظة على درجة حرارة أجسامها دافئة بدرجة ثابتة، وإن كان بعضها لد القدرة على رفع درجة حرارة جسمه إلى درجة أعلى من درجة حرارة البيئة المحيطة. وينعكس أثر ذلك على قدرتها على الانتشار على سطح الأرض، كما ينعكس ذلك على تصرفاتها اليومية والفصلية. فخلافاً لذوات الدم الحار، لا تستطيع ذوات الدم البارد الانتشار والعيش في المناطق المتجمدة على سطح اليابس ولا في المحيطات، ولا حتى على قمم الجبال المتجمدة. وتلجأ الكثير منها لتجنب انخفاض درجات الحرارة شتاءً بالبيات الشتوي Hibernate قبل أن تستطيع القيام بأي نشاط يذكر. فمعظمها يلجأ إلى أخذ حمام شمسي تحت أشعة الشمس مباشرة لرفع درجة حرارة جسمه، خاصة عندما تعتدل أو تنخفض درجة حرارة الهواء المحيط به. فمن المناظر المألوفة في الصحراء، أن ترى الضب أو الحرباء على صخرة تحت أشعة الشمس مباشرة خاصة في ساعات الصباح الأولى.
